Alabama’s emergence as a culinary destination has been on an upward trajectory for decades. Several factors have contributed to the state’s rise in culinary fame including a culinary heritage deeply rooted in Southern cuisines influenced by African, Native American and European flavors as well as a trend towards farm-to-table offerings. On the national stage, many of the state’s chefs have been nominated or won the coveted James Beard Foundation awards for their talent and achievements in the kitchen.
Although Alabama is home to a diverse culinary scene that is rich in everything from upscale wineries and breweries to hidden hole-in-the-wall establishments, visitors may not be aware of the award-winning fine dining restaurants that can be found throughout many cities in the state:
Auburn:
The culinary scene in this small, southeastern city is intertwined with the vibrant energy that is associated with a university town. Restaurants like Acre and The Depot epitomize the fine-dining culture with their meticulously crafted dishes with a Southern twist. Acre is specifically known for its farm-to-table cuisine that is sourced from local farmers and showcases Alabama’s agricultural roots. Galley & Garden, another Birmingham gem, is located in a historic 20th-century home in the heart of Southside. It is a refined dining experience. Hot and Hot Fish Club is owned and operated by Chris and Idie Hastings. Chris is a James Beard “Best Chef in the South” Award winner. This esteemed restaurant is located in Pepper Place, which is considered Birmingham’s creative district.
