Groups who were not white men of means had to fight to get the right to vote in the U.S.A. in Alabama, women suffragist had a tougher fight than their northern counterparts for unique cultural reasons. For many of the same reasons, African American of either sex who wanted to vote faced legal challenges plus intimidation and even physical violence. This exhibit will tell the story o these struggles with a focus on Birmingham and Alabama people and events.
