The National Center of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University presents "The Ralph David Abernathy Lecture Series: The 64th Observance of the Montgomery Bus Boycott." Event Description: This event will observe the sixty-fourth anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott by examining and celebrating the bus boycott’s mass meetings - biweekly, weekly, informational, strategy, and spiritual sessions responsible for this event’s success. The keynote speaker for this occasion will be Rev. Dr. Julius Scruggs, Pastor Emeritus, First Baptist Church, Huntsville, AL; Past President of the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention and the National Baptist Convention, USA.The theme for the 2019 observance of this major episode in African-American history is “The Seedbed of the African-American Freedom Movement in the Twentieth Century.” This year’s program will honor Montgomery Bus Boycott activists who formed a wider but crucial set of supporters of this moment for African-American liberation. ASU’s National Center for Civil Rights will issue special resolutions will honor these gallant soldiers, including carpool drivers, mass meeting churches, everyday citizens, and others. The event will also feature Mass Meeting hymns and special musical selections. About the Series: Named for its most distinguished alumnus, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, the program is the centerpiece of events fulfilling the mission of the National Center to research, record, preserve and teach the history of a courageous and determined people who refused to surrender to fear and intimidation to secure their full rights as American citizens.
