On Saturday, September 7, the Alabama Historical Commission is honoring General Joe Wheeler's birthday at his home in North Alabama. Visitors to Pond Spring, the General Joe Wheeler Home, will be able to sample cake made from a family recipe said to be the Generals favorite. The public can explore the grounds from 10am to 2pm to see re-enactors participate in a skirmish and fire a working Civil War cannon. Various folk artists demonstrating their skills such as a blacksmith, chair caners, re-enactors demonstrating pit-fire cooking can be found on the ground. Representatives from the Tennessee Valley Beekeepers Association and the Happy Hearts Quilt Guild will also be performing demonstrations onsite. At 12pm a Nashville musician will perform on the Wheeler Home front porch. Entrance to the grounds, 12 pm concert, and cake samples are free. Admission to the Wheeler House, is $8 adults, $5 seniors/college students/military, and $3 children 6-18, free for children under 6.
