Join us to meet artist Brian Walker and hear him talk about his First Floor Ramp Gallery exhibit, Strange Bestiary. The event is free to attend. Brian will talk about his work and his process as well as answer questions. From the Artist: This series of work describes fantastic beasts, carved in linoleum or wood, like a collection of mythological creatures. In ancient times, scholars would collect folklore and fantastic tales and bind them into a bestiary, a gorgeous book to share these animals and stories. Having these ideas and creatures in the world makes it a more fun and magical place to live, so I make up more of them as I go. My work is carved, inked, and printed on a physical printing press because I find the carving peaceful, sometimes even meditative and the final product has a weight and a kind of fidelity that no other process can duplicate. My work has been described as pop, surrealist, and a work of fantasy by people who like putting art into categories. Sometimes people tell me it’s awesome, or metal. One drunk woman told me it was the kind of thing Drew Barrymore would like. Ms. Barrymore has not responded to comment. About the Artist: Brian Walker has been a Huntsville native since 2001. He has been been drawing these absurd monsters, creatures, and beasts since middle school. Brian studied at the University of Alabama at Huntsville and got into printmaking his senior year 2006, and has been making up for lost time ever since. He sells his work through Green Pea Press at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, his websitebraintwist.net, and at fan conventions around the southeast.
