An Artist, a Queen, and a Southern Lady: The Art and Life of Marian Acker Macpherson

An Artist, a Queen, and a Southern Lady: The Art and Life of Marian Acker Macpherson

Apr 9th 2021 - Sep 30th 20219:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on those days which the Museum is open.

A Queen, An Artist, and a Southern Lady: The Life and Art of Marian Acker Macpherson examines the existence and creativity of one of the leading figures in Mobile Carnival History. Marian Acker Macpherson, who was herself a Queen of Carnival, was a train artist whose engagement with Mobile's and Mardi Gras' art scenes spanned seven decades. The grand and feisty lady not only designed and depicted the scenes and symbols that define the appearance, experience, and spirit of Carnival, but also actively shaped Carnival history and the perception of Mobile. Comprised almost entirely of loans from important private collections, this exhibit will feature prints, etchings, watercolors, rare photographs, and numerous artifacts that examine Macpherson's understanding and shaping of Mardi Gras and the city which its American roots were planted.
