The North Alabama Japanese Garden was established in an undeveloped area of the park by Robert Black in 1988 as a hobby and a way to enjoy the outdoors with his children. The Tea House was built in 1991, and the inaugural Japanese Spring Festival was in 1992.
The Friends of Monte Sano State Park Japanese Garden is a team of volunteers dedicated to continually making improvements and maintaining the garden's beauty. The garden is full of Japanese Maples and azaleas native to the area. It is also a popular location within Monte Sano State Park for photography and bird-watching.
