Built over the Sucarnoochee River in 1861 of hand-hewn heartpine timbers joined with wooden pegs, and later moved to Alamuchee Creek. In 1969 moved to the University of West Alabama campus.

Historians say, beginning in 1854, an old blind mule pulled an auger around day after day until the artesian well was completed in 1857.

The University of West Alabama was chartered in 1835 as a church-related female academy and admitted its first students in 1839.
