A group of West African slaves brought illegally to Mobile, Alabama on the schooner The CLOTILDA, which was the last group of Africans imported to the U.S. in 1860, built Free Africatown in the midst of Jim Crow segregation and Reconstruction , which was run by Blacks and controlled by Africans.
