Baumhower's Restaurant

Baumhower's Restaurant

Montgomery

Baumhower’s is equal parts passion for food and the quality Bob Baumhower learned from playing days with the Crimson Tide and Miami Dolphins. When a teammate introduced him to Buffalo-style wings in 1981, a love affair and Bob’s first restaurant were born. The small counter-service spot grew eventually to the 13-restaurant gumbo that makes up Aloha Hospitality today. The sports-themed restaurant boasts dozens of flat screens for game time and a museum-worthy collection of sporting memorabilia. Baumhower’s expansive menu celebrates a variety of our legendary wings but also features chuck and beef-brisket ground hamburgers, salads with scratch-made dressings, fish tacos and more. A must? The Hot Bama Brown Sandwich – named one of Alabama’s “100 Dishes to Eat Before You Die”!

One of the 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama

    Hot Bama Brown Sandwich

The Hot Brown originated from the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Ky., in the mid-1920s. Hotel guests needed something to satiate their hunger after an evening of drinks and dancing, so chef Fred K. Schmidt created the sandwich as a hearty alternative to traditional late-night food. In the 1920s, sliced, roasted turkey was a rarity, usually only served at holiday dinners. Even so, the sandwich quickly became the choice of 95 percent of the customers at the Brown Hotel's restaurant.

Bob Baumhower’s homage to this Louisville creation includes tender slices of “almost-fried turkey” — seasoned turkey wrapped in foil and flash fried — served on toasted sourdough bread and topped with Blanco cheese, Parmesan cheese, mushroom beef gravy, applewood-smoked bacon and fresh, sliced tomato. A side of mashed potatoes covered in the same mushroom beef gravy completes the dish.
