Inspired by the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, The New York Times described Fly as “a superior piece of theatrical synergy.” With a focus on hope, endurance, and accomplishment, Fly tells the story of the first African-American Army Air Corps fighters who flew over the skies of Europe and North Africa during World War II. Fly dramatizes the historic contributions made by the Tuskegee Airmen to the desegregation of the American military and the furthering of civil rights.

Mardi Gras Day in Mobile

Mobile

Mobile is not only recognized as the location of the first-known American Mardi Gras celebration in 1703 (yes, even before New Orleans), but also as home to "America's Family Mardi Gras" delighting both young and old from around town and across the nation. This magnificent celebration lasts over two and a half weeks and concludes on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent. For weeks, the streets of downtown Mobile are filled with the sights and sounds of live marching bands, brilliantly colored floats and, of course, teeming crowds of parade-goers. The floats are glowing spectacles manned by masked riders festooned in satin and sequins, and armed with crowd-pleasing "throws" such as beads, MoonPies, doubloons and candy. Mardi Gras must be experienced to be fully understood, and Mobile is the perfect place.

Mobile

Rene Culler’s site-specific work is a mural in glass that celebrates the species-rich Delta and its atmospheric qualities. The Delta is a changeling environment which is constantly shaped and molded by the weather and waterways. As the grasses, almost transparent, catch the light, Culler’s drawings and painting in glass suggest the landscape that southern Alabama holds so dear. The composition is a wall of natural light utilized as a glass canvas for drawing, painting and printing with vitreous enamels. Slumped dimensional panels and blown glass abstractly portray the location’s dimensionality.

The composition is a wall of natural light utilized as a glass canvas for drawing, painting and printing with vitreous enamels. THE MOBILE DELTA: Glass & Light
