Soul Glow: A Black Experience

"Soul Glow: A Black Experience" features the work of Darius Hill, who serves as chair of the Visual Arts Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. In this exhibition, Hill's mixed media pieces use memory to trigger an investigation of black identity, with the intention of exploring related issues in new ways. While once drawing heavily from concrete cultural symbols and his interest in ancient architecture and modern design, the artist's recent work communicates his message through abstraction. In the construction of large pieces using wood and other materials, Hill relies on repeating patterns and shapes to represent the essence of his discoveries about what it means to be black in today's world.
