Mike Howell-Professor Emeritus, Samford Univ. Dept. of Biological & Environmental Sciences, Guest Speaker. Complimentary refreshments are offered at 1:30 pm at the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center (next door to AWC) followed by the program at 2:00 pm. Alabama is blessed with an abundance of waterways, from mountain streams to black-water sloughs to coastal bays, Alabama has it all. Beneath these 77,000 miles of freshwater rivers and streams lies more aquatic biodiversity than any other state, including 38% of all North American fish species. Collectively, darters are among the most colorful of these fishes. This program will showcase not only this dazzling array of darters, but also many other fish species that call Alabama's waterways home. Weather permitting, an informal nature walk follows the program so be sure to bring your camera, binoculars & field guides. (Free after paid admission to Oak Mountain State Park.)
