Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Guest Speaker. Each winter thousands of cranes descend upon Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur. The majority of them are Sandhill Cranes but a precious few are federally endangered Whooping Cranes. The spectacle of immense flocks of cranes draws an equally impressive number of visitors to the refuge who are crazy for cranes! This program will feature a guest speaker from the refuge who will share everything you wanted to know about these stately birds: when they start to arrive, where's the best place and time to view them, their diet...everything! Weather permitting, an informal nature walk follows the program so be sure to bring your camera, binoculars & field guides. (Free after paid admission to Oak Mountain State Park.)
